Interagency Negotiation Exercise

18-20 December 2012. CASL will conduct the end of fall semester exercise for the Eisenhower School. This interagency negotiation exercise will explore the balance between foreign direct investment in the United States and national security concerns using a scenario based upon the Committee for Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). Participants will represent government agencies and the involved companies as they negotiate a proposed foreign merger/acquisition of a U.S. company, whose change in ownership has national security implications. Arctic/South China Sea, National War College elective

NWC 6300: 14 & 17 December, 2012. CASL will provide an exercise for National War College students to better understand, develop, and implement strategies focused on the non-military instruments of national power. Arctic region and the South China Sea scenarios will test the students’ ability to formulate strategies that balance the U.S.’s ability to persuade regional actors, and challenge their ability to adjust strategic goals based on new injects.(NDU/JPME)

AfPak Program, “Methods of Analysis and Argumentation”

CISA 6942: 13 December 2012. CASL will facilitate an interagency role-playing exercise is support of the “Methods of Analysis and Argumentation” class for the AfPak Program. The goal of the exercise is to provide the students with the opportunity to demonstrate metacognitive skills taught in the class, while attempting to manage a national security crisis. (NDU/JPME)

National Security Policy Analysis Forum, Hidden Peril II Exercise

Executive Branch officials, military leaders and subject matter experts will examine possible USG strategies to avoid, prevent, or stop a threatened or actual campaign of terrorism within the U.S., and consider plans for integrating existing Federal capabilities to prevent IED terrorist attacks. Shrouded Horizons, “Doing Strategy”

NWC 6110: 27 November, 04 & 11 December: CASL will facilitate exercise Shrouded Horizons to National War College elective course, “Doing Strategy.” Shrouded Horizons creates a context for discussing measures the U.S. and international community could take to respond to an escalating ethnic conflict and mass atrocity crisis, as well as the underlying factors which constrain policy options and create challenges in organizing a response. The exercise provides a venue to identify the tools and strategies that the U.S. Government and its partners can use when facing ethnic conflicts and mass atrocities.

iCollege Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Course

30 November 2012, CASL staff will facilitate “Shaded Fire,” an exercise depicting an urban domestic cyber incident for the iCollege’s CIIP course. Students will consider the range of responses available to cyber security stakeholder, while working collaboratively to develop a response to the problem. (NDU/JPME)

National War College Elective Exercise: Arctic and South China Sea

14 & 17 December, 2012: CASL support for the National War College will provide students a vehicle to better understand, develop, and implement strategies focused on the non-military instruments of power. Scenarios based on the Arctic region and the South China Sea will test the students’ ability to formulate strategies that balance the U.S.’s ability to coerce, induce, and persuade regional actors, and challenge their ability to adjust strategic goals based on new injects. CASL will also provide ongoing support throughout the semester in gathering relevant background materials and academic writings to ensure participants are well versed in the unique regional dynamics in which the scenario takes place.

Exercise BEYOND the BORDER: On 12 October and 29 November, CASL will facilitate an outreach exercise for BrighamYoung University and Syracuse University. The exercise explores the interplay between foreign policy and homeland security interests along the U.S. – Mexican border, examines security issues from both the U.S. and Mexican perspectives, and considers the impact of inter-agency dynamics on national-level decision making processes.
